I still can’t believe this movie came out in 1947. It looks incredible. The colors, the lighting, the way shadows are used, it’s honestly some of the most beautiful cinematography I’ve ever seen in a film this old. I kept forgetting it was all done on sets in a studio, because it feels so real and alive. Huge shoutout to Powell and Pressburger and cinematographer Jack Cardiff. Just stunning work.
The story builds slowly, but in a really hypnotic way. There’s this constant tension under the surface that just keeps tightening. And then that finale… I literally gasped. It caught me completely off guard and gave me chills. So intense, but also so beautifully shot, it’s kind of perfect.
This one really stuck with me. It’s haunting, gorgeous, and way more intense than I expected. Definitely a new favorite from that era.
