I play games almost exclusively on mobile and my 3DS. I AM the kind of customer that would shell out $8 for a good mobile game like Year Walk or Monument Valley. But that being said, I can’t imagine Pokemon, Fire Emblem or especially Animal Crossing on mobile. At least not right now. I’ve tried a couple different JRPGs on mobile and the controls were horrible because they basically tried to simulate the buttons and control pad of a handheld system on the phone. The reason games like Monument Valley or even Angry Birds are so good are because they are well suited to the medium.
Idk, I hope Nintendo handheld systems don’t go away. It’s my favorite way to play games. Besides, if I could carry around Animal Crossing wherever I go, I would basically stop interacting with the real world.
I really hope that Handheld Gaming doesn’t go away either–mainly because it’s what I grew up with. I also believe that the experiences will always be better because mobile gaming is so fragmented. It’s hard to say what the future holds though.
I don’t think it will die because tech is going two different ways and that will help handhelds survive. High performance devices dedicated to one thing (Handheld consoles) and Jack of all trades and masters of none(Cell Phones). One will give you a much better gaming experience than the other.
